SMART Goals with Nurse Maria

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream

- Les Brown

Spring is just around the corner and already some of our New Years resolutions are sitting dusty on the shelf. Over our lifetimes we have all tried to make positive changes, whether it's at the start of a new season, year, or chapter of our lives. We may find ourselves motivated by someone else's achievements, or met with an obstacle or challenge in our life that must be tackled. We then find ourselves asking once again, what do we want to do next, and do better?

Perhaps you want to do something for your social well being, such as joining a group or setting up a weekly phone call with a friend or family member. Or does journaling or meditating speak to you, something that can make an improvement on your emotional status? How about increasing your brain power by doing a daily puzzle, reading a magazine, or joining the SES book club?  Do you want to improve your physical health by getting more activity, drinking more water, or eating more vegetables?

There are many methods or frameworks to help us set a goal.  One of these methods to consider is the SMART goal setting framework. It works like this:

S = Specific  What is your goal? What do you want to accomplish? (Keep it concrete and simple).

M = Measurable How will you keep track? Answer questions such as: How much? How many? When will I know I have succeeded?

A = Achievable  Make a realistic plan. How will you do it? Do you have the resources or time?

R = Relevant Is it worthwhile? How will this help you? Does this goal fit with your values?

T = Time Based Set an end date. When will you achieve your goal?

Let us know how Southeast Seniors can help you reach your SMART goals this spring!
